Ever wondered why springs matter?

Springs To life

It has been said that the wheel is arguably the most important mechanical invention of all time. While that may be true, have you ever wondered how springs have affected our lives? A spring is often defined as an elastic object which is used to store mechanical energy. Springs are devices that change shape in response to external forces, returning to their original shapes when the forces are removed.

Stapler

In an average office stapler, there are around 8 different parts. This includes the metal head, magazine, anvil, base, staplers, pin, springs and the hanger. The magazine is connected to the head and is the part that homes all the staples. The hanger is the piece that connects the head and base. The pin is the part that you see at the back of the stapler, which is responsible for letting the head swing up so that staples can be inserted.

Spectacles

The second most common type of hinges of spectacles that you will encounter is Spring Hinges (or “flex hinges”). These hinges are equipped with a small spring that affords the arms a greater range of movement and does not limit them to the traditional, 90-degree angle. These hinges provide greater comfort for the wearer and are more able to withstand everyday use. Most Spring Hinges are constructed with 3 barrels. Spring Hinges require fewer adjustments. While it is still a good idea to go see your optician if these frames are falling off your face, the likelihood of this happening right out of the package is low.

Mattresses

There are four types of mattress coils. A key desideratum is “response range”, meaning the change in firmness as the spring is compressed – initially soft, to conform to the body, then hard, to provide support. In increasing order of response range and cost, the types are:Continuous coils is an innerspring configuration in which the rows of coils are formed from a single piece of wire.
Bonnell coils are the oldest and most common. First adapted from buggy seat springs of the 19th century, they are still prevalent in mid-priced mattresses.
Offset coils are an hourglass type coil on which portions of the top and bottom convolutions have been flattened.
Marshall coils, also known as wrapped or encased coils or pocket springs, are thin-gauge, barrel-shaped, knotless coils individually encased in fabric pockets—normally a fabric from the man-made, non-woven fibre.

Bottom spring: The bottom spring is the spring placed at the bottom part of the shaft (above the handle). The bottom springs allow the umbrella to open and close.
Top Spring: The top spring is located up higher on the shaft, but bellow the runner when the umbrella is in its open position. The top spring allows the umbrella to open and close.

Door Locks

Lock springs have played an important role in the design and function of locks throughout history. In the Roman locks, ward springs were used in padlocks and as compression springs in pin tumbler locks. In Scandinavia, ward spring padlocks have been in use from the Viking Era until well into the 18th century. Various types of springs were also used in door locks and chest locks. Before 1600 they were V-shaped, while later they could also be rolled, helical springs. Early springs were manufactured of cold-hammered iron, making them quite heavy. Chest locks generally have ring-shaped springs.

Most metal locks have some type of steel springs. A lock spring creates tension – which is usually what the key must displace to turn the bolt. Thus, springs store power to perform a task either now or later: pushing forward, holding back or softening a force. Springs have done this kind of work for nearly 2,000 years.

Watches

There are three different types of springs commonly found in a mechanical wristwatch. These 3 springs together keep the watch functioning. They do everything from setting time to keeping the time running.
